She trained for three years to gain a brown belt in the style, and then graduated from Lenox Memorial High School. She then began attending the Dalton Judo Club in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Modafferi's training began in taekwondo at the age of 13 in Pennsylvania, moving on to Mark Lawler's KenpÅ Karate in the high school. Modafferi is of Italian and Lithuanian descent. A professional competitor since 2003, she is considered one of the pioneers of women's MMA. Though she last fought in the flyweight division, she has fought in multiple weight classes in her career.
